Lonely? How About A Walk In The Woods

--

It’s autumn and Pennsylvania — where I live — has just come out with a new list of restrictions to try to keep us safe during this pandemic. I expect it’s the same wherever you are; America is not doing too well these days. In my county, we are currently back to lockdown-like conditions: we are only supposed to leave the house for school, work, medical care, grocery shopping, and exercise. So after dropping my daughter off at school in the morning, I have been stopping by one of two parks between her school and home and taking a walk.

It has been a gorgeous fall, and I have been rewarded for getting out each day by explosions of brilliant colors, which had lasted much longer than I expected.

The wildlife has been abundant: I have seen two owls (a barred owl and an eastern screech owl), black squirrels, gray squirrels, chipmunks, deer, and so many birds!

Tiny Screech Owl

I’m struck by the tiny things: ice surrounding a fallen leaf

to the downed trees of a very active beaver

Some days are rainy and gray

Others are full of sunshine

Walking in the woods has been the best remedy for boredom, loneliness, and fear that I can think of.

Have a happy and safe autumn!
